New HP... what more can I say?05 June 2004 - 4:23 p.m. Aaaaaahh. *sigh of contentment* The magic that is the third HP movie. Taken from various newspapers: -Alfonso Cuaron, best known for making the gritty coming-of-age film Y Tu Mama Tambien, has taken over directing duties and taken the tale in a darker direction. -Under Cuarón's direction, Prisoner of Azkaban loses Columbus's glossy sparkle and adopts a colder, rougher look: Harry's school, Hogwarts, becomes less of a fairy-tale castle and more of a magnificent, crumbling ruin. -Cuaron has completely reinvented the series with a bleakly beautiful style that resembles German expressionism, using cold shades of grey, a generous amount of black and off-kilter camera angles. -Purists may balk that this is an art-house version of Harry Potter - and with any revered pop culture phenomenon, fans are likely to get riled about something. And Tanya and I were, for the ride home anyway. They cut out important stuff.. but realising that we don't care, seeing as we've read the books, we have found a new love for this strange new Harry Potter movie... Very dark, very stylised. Better acting from the kids, and scenes showing them to be teenagers, and not little kids. It's all good. I missed the Fill the Hill (pro-pot rally) on Parliament Hill due to my working. But there were lots of shaggy-haired hippy boys at the bus stop coming home :) I have been feeling very anti-social lately. Well, no, that's not right. More just contented with entertaining myself. I work, come home, and read, watch movies, surf the net, watch TV, etc etc. I forget that I'm supposed to be going out into the world. |
