Today was surely a great and memorable day.04 February 2005 - 1:28 a.m. So tomorrow (well, today) is Tia's birthday. We're going to Joker, a club that is predominantly hip-hop. Why? That's Tia's cup o'tea. And being the good friends we are, we're all coming along. Even SCOTT. It should be a good time nonetheless, despite the reservations from some members of our social group. Finished Franny and Zooey, I liked it but I keep getting the feeling that I didn't "get it". I don't think I "get" a lot of things. This is why I am a terrible English student. I love Salinger's writing, it flows very nicely, and is very readable. There is lots of dialogue. I loved how each character's every movement was described. You could picture each scene vividly in your mind... now the book was about spirituality, which isn't my strong point. But it was good. Also reread the Bell Jar, which is a fantastic book. I read it a couple of years ago.. but I really liked it this time. I find Esther (not enough people are named that...) breaks down rather quickly, though, but maybe in the 60's you only needed to go to a psychiatrist once or twice before the shock treatments. Who knows. Either way, I highly recommend it. Stories of university students who a) don't know what to do with their arts degree after school, b) realise they've got no skills in life other than getting good grades and prizes in school and c) feel as if they should be having the time of their lives, but feel as if it's all just passing by and seem incapable of enjoying it as much as they should .. are very good. Why does it seem that every book I read is about a female university student, usually before the 90's, that has some sort of mental breakdown? In case people are interested, I thought I'd put up my readings for this week, so you can see an example of the work a second year arts student at U of T is paying the big bucks to do each week. NEW271: R. Goldstein's "The Homosexual Gentleman". R. Walcott's "Shopping Fetishes and the Pink Dollar Hoax". Wasn't that exciting! "Baby don't worry cause now I got your back. And every time you feel like crying, I'm gonna try and make you laugh. And if I can't, if it just hurts too bad, then we will wait for it to pass and I will keep you company through those days so long and black." |
